A friend of mine, who has a day care, was having a house full of sick-os, including herself. She came across some articles talking about onions and how they are so great for us! The idea is that you cut an onion in half, and put it a room where you are most often. It is supposed to attract the germs instead of them attacking you! Many places online says it is an old wives tale, but she started to do it and since then they haven't been fighting colds! She said that she would sometimes do just a couple of slices, if it were a more expensive one and that it didn't work as well as 1/2 of an onion.
She shared this info with me at the beginning of November, and we started it right away! Carson has been in school, the boys go to AWANA, and to Sunday school and we haven't had any cold symptoms since the onion has been out. I put 1/2 in their room and then another 1/2 in the kitchen/family room area. We have been using just regular white onions from either Winco or Sherms Thunderbird. Nothing fancy or organic. All I know, is it has been working for us!
Give it a try. Oh, and we usually leave it out for about 5 days or so. This article says to change it out every couple of days though. You can try it out for your family and see what works. The onions do smell, but it is worth it to not be dealing with sinus, nose, and throat junk!
